Course Information

Students under the age of 16 must provide proof of completing an online course prior to enrolling in behind the wheel lessons. If a different provider was used for the online class, CIESC must receive the completion certificate or documentation from that online provider before issuing the form needed to obtain the learner permit. Our six-hour package, along with the completion certificate, will meet the BMV requirements for having successfully completed a driver education program.

Pick up and drop off for these lessons will be from one of the locations listed below. We do not offer pick up and drop off at your home.

Behind the Wheel FAQs

When can my child obtain his/her learner permit?

We recommend waiting until the student successfully completes the class portion of the program, if enrolled, before obtaining the learner permit. The license branch will ask for the Certification of Driver Education Enrollment form. This form will be emailed after successful enrollment in either the course (online or traditional), in-car instruction or package.

Students will also need to present an original birth certificate, original social security card, school report card, as well as proof of residency. A parent may have to provide their valid driver’s license, original birth certificate or passport and two proofs of residency. Please visit the BMV website for more information.

When will my child begin behind-the-wheel driving?

Students must be registered for the in-car instruction portion of the program. Once the permit has been obtained and you are ready to begin your lessons, you must update your account with the permit number. This will place your name on the ready-to-drive wait list. Please allow up to six weeks to be assigned to an instructor after updating your account (during heavy enrollment periods the wait could extend to 8-12 weeks.) Once assigned to an instructor, the six hours of instruction must be completed within 90 days.

Can students begin behind-the-wheel driving as they are taking the online course?

It is recommended that the student complete the online class before obtaining the probationary license. If the student used the Certificate of Enrollment (CDE) to obtain the learner permit, they must successfully complete the online class before beginning the in-car instruction.

Can my child be paired to drive with a friend?

Yes. If your child needs to be assigned with a specific student for carpooling reasons, please be sure both students will complete the online course around the same time and include the pair request at the time of registration or call the office to update the students’ accounts.

I've completed the online class through another online provider, can I register for in-car instruction only?

Yes. However, if you are in need of the Certificate of Enrollment (to obtain the permit), you must submit the following: Online Course Completion Certificate with noted start and end dates and documentation (screenshot or printed activity log) that a total of 30-course hours have been completed.

We can not guarantee that we will accept the completion form so it is important that approval is given prior to enrolling and paying for the in-car instruction service.

After completing your program, when is my child eligible to receive their probationary license?

Assuming the student completed both class and in-car instruction with CIESC, each student must be at least 16 years and 90 days and hold their learner permit for 180 days before applying for the probationary license (without driver education: 16 years and 270 days).

What is your refund policy?

Refund requests made after a lesson has been completed are subject to the per-hour rate ($60 per lesson). Prior to instructor assignment, a full refund of the in-car instruction portion will be honored.

Please be advised a refund of the in-car driving instruction with CIESC DriverEdSafety will disqualify the student from obtaining the probationary license at 16 years and 90 days and would not qualify for any insurance discounts if applicable.
