Behind the Wheel FAQs

When can my child obtain his/her learner permit?

We recommend waiting until the student successfully completes the class portion of the program, if enrolled, before obtaining the learner permit. The license branch will ask for the Certification of Driver Education Enrollment form. This form will be emailed after successful enrollment in either the class (online or traditional), in-car instruction or package. Your student will also need to present an original birth certificate, original social security card, school report card as well as proof of residency. A parent may have to provide their valid driver’s license, original birth certificate or passport and 2 proofs of residency. Please visit the BMV website for more information.

When will my child begin behind-the-wheel driving?

The student must be registered for the in-car instruction portion of the program. Once the permit has been obtained, typically after completing the class phase, our office must be notified in order to be assigned to an instructor and begin the 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction. To notify the office, email drivered@ciesc.k12.in.us with confirmation that the permit has been obtained and the student is ready to begin instruction without conflicts. The instructor will work with the student’s availability to create the driving schedule, including evenings and weekends if necessary. The 6 hours of instruction must be completed within 120 days once assigned to an instructor. After notifying the office, please allow up to 4 weeks to be assigned to an instructor.
